Junction – South Melbourne

The original façade is retained and refined, preserving its presence within the established streetscape. Beyond, a contemporary upper-level volume is introduced, expressed through a restrained material palette and precise detailing, creating a deliberate dialogue between old and new.

Internally, the plan is reorganised to improve flow and spatial clarity. Circulation transitions from a series of enclosed rooms to a more open living domain positioned toward the rear, where light and outlook are prioritised.

Material continuity defines the interior. Timber flooring, masonry elements and soft plaster finishes are applied with restraint, allowing proportion and junction detailing to carry the architectural expression. New work is clearly legible, avoiding direct replication while maintaining cohesion with the existing structure.

Openings are carefully positioned to introduce natural light deep into the plan, particularly within the living areas where large-format glazing extends the interior toward the courtyard.

Vertical circulation connects the original and new components, linking upper-level accommodation within a clear and efficient planning framework. The addition introduces increased volume and controlled light, reinforcing the vertical hierarchy within the home.

Externally, the rear addition is resolved as a complementary form, with darker cladding set against retained masonry to establish contrast and depth without competing with the original dwelling.

The result is a balanced and resolved residence, where existing character is retained and extended through a measured contemporary response.
