Elm – Port Melbourne

A considered transformation of an existing Port Melbourne residence, Elm combines a contemporary renovation with a carefully integrated upper-level addition.

The project reworks the original dwelling through a clear architectural intervention, increasing accommodation while improving natural light, circulation and connection throughout the home. The additional level is incorporated with restraint, allowing the residence to retain a strong relationship with the established streetscape.

Internally, the planning is organised around a generous open living domain where kitchen, dining and living spaces extend directly to the rear garden. Large-format openings create a stronger connection between indoors and out while enhancing the sense of openness throughout the home.

Material selection is handled with simplicity and control. Timber flooring, stone surfaces and custom joinery establish a cohesive interior language, providing warmth, durability and continuity across both levels.

Natural light plays a central role in defining the internal experience. Carefully positioned glazing and openings draw daylight deep into the plan, improving the quality of the living spaces and reinforcing the connection between the interior and outdoor environment.
Externally, the addition is expressed through a restrained contemporary form. Timber screening, landscaped elements and carefully considered detailing provide privacy while maintaining a strong relationship with the outdoor areas.

The result is a balanced and contemporary residence where thoughtful planning and considered detailing have transformed an existing dwelling into a highly functional family home.
